Moving from the World’s Trap to God’s Triumph
Moving from the World’s Trap to God’s Triumph
James 4:4 — NLT
“You adulterous people! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.”
Proverbs 29:25 — NLT
“Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety.”
Psalm 46:1 — NLT
“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.”
Psalm 91:11 — NLT
“For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go.”
Jeremiah 17:14 — NLT
“O Lord, if you heal me, I will be truly healed; if you save me, I will be truly saved. My praises are for you alone!”
1 Chronicles 16:34 — NLT
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.”
Hey, friend. Pull up a chair and take a deep breath with me.
Yesterday was one of those days where I barely had time to think, let alone sit down and write a devotion!
From 9 to 11, we had Ladies Bible Study, where we are studying Ruth and learning so much. Then came the Worship Committee meeting, followed by another meeting that lasted until 2:00.
Then I went home, grabbed Ross, and headed back out for Tribe Thursday with the kids.
We made spiders out of paper plates and zip ties and then raced them while talking about Galatians 5:7 and what it means to run a good race. We had some good old-fashioned run-around-and-have-fun time, and two of the kids even had glockenspiel practice!
At 4:45, we loaded everybody up and took them home. Then Ross and I drove about 40 minutes to Houlton for animal supplies and a few groceries.
Supper was a little late, but it was yummy.
Overall? A very busy, very full, but very productive day.
And as I thought about all of that this morning, I realized something.
Sometimes God’s lessons don’t happen when we are sitting quietly with our Bibles open. Sometimes they happen while we are living our wonderfully messy, busy, ordinary lives.
And that brings me right back to these Scriptures.
The Trap of Trying to Please Everyone
James 4:4 is a strong verse. James uses the word “world” to describe more than the physical world God created. The Greek word is kosmos (κόσμος), which can refer to the world or the human system around us and, in this context, the values that set themselves against God.
The world constantly tells us what we should be.
More successful.
More attractive.
More productive.
More wealthy.
More popular.
More everything.
And if we aren't careful, we can start measuring our worth by those things.
Proverbs 29:25 says:
“Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety.”
That word trap gives us such a picture.
A snare catches you.
And sometimes people’s opinions can become a snare.
We worry about what someone will think.
We wonder whether someone will approve.
We say yes when we really should say no.
We compare ourselves with someone else.
We try to keep everybody happy.
And before we know it, we aren't living freely anymore.
We are living according to everybody else's expectations.
But God says, Trust Me.
That doesn't mean we stop caring about people. It means we stop allowing people's opinions to become our master.
There is freedom in knowing that I don't have to impress the whole world.
I just need to be faithful to God.
Run to the Right Refuge
Psalm 46:1 says:
“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.”
I love that word refuge.
The Hebrew word is machaseh (מַחֲסֶה), meaning a refuge, shelter, or place of protection.
Think about that.
God doesn't promise that storms won't come.
He promises that He will be our shelter in the storm.
And boy, have Ross and I learned that one!
There are days when life feels like one more thing is being added to the pile.
One more bill.
One more appointment.
One more problem to solve.
One more thing that needs to be done.
But God is still there.
And He isn't standing far away saying, “Figure it out and then come find Me.”
He is right there in the middle of it.
Psalm 91:11 reminds us that God commands His angels concerning us.
I don't pretend to understand everything about how God works in the unseen world.
But I do know this:
I am never as alone as I sometimes feel.
God is present.
God is watching.
God is working.
And God is our refuge.
God Can Heal What We Can't Fix
Then Jeremiah cries out:
“O Lord, if you heal me, I will be truly healed; if you save me, I will be truly saved.”
The Hebrew verb for “heal” here is related to rapha (רָפָא), meaning to heal or make whole.
And I love that Jeremiah doesn't try to dress up his prayer.
He simply brings his need to God.
Sometimes we do the opposite.
We try to fix everything ourselves.
We try to control every outcome.
We work harder.
We worry harder.
We think harder.
We plan harder.
And sometimes we even wear ourselves out trying to help God do God's job!
Yesterday was a perfect example for me.
I had a schedule packed from morning until night.
And today there is another list waiting.
I'm making cookies to take to United Women of Faith so we can put together around 24 boxes of treats for the businesses that helped us with the baskets for our tea party.
We also heard back from the woman helping us with the grant.
There is one more item I need to take care of, and I plan to get that done so we can get our power back on as soon as possible.
There is plenty to do.
But there is a difference between working with God and trying to carry everything without Him.
I can do my part.
I can make the cookies.
I can gather the paperwork.
I can make the phone calls.
I can take care of what is in front of me.
But ultimately, I have to trust God with what I cannot control.
That is where faith comes in.
And Then There Is Gratitude
1 Chronicles 16:34 says:
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.”
The Hebrew Scriptures use the language of thanksgiving and praise throughout this passage of Scripture. In the New Testament, one beautiful Greek word for giving thanks is eucharisteō (εὐχαριστέω), meaning to give thanks or express gratitude.
And that word reminds me of something important:
Gratitude isn't dependent upon everything going perfectly.
Yesterday wasn't perfect.
Today won't be perfect.
Our circumstances aren't perfect.
But God is still good.
His faithful love hasn't changed.
And when we stop long enough to notice what God is doing, we begin to see blessings that might otherwise get buried underneath our busy schedules.
Yesterday I saw them in Bible study.
I saw them around a table with church people.
I saw them in a room full of children racing homemade spiders.
I saw them when two kids practiced their glockenspiels.
I saw them in a late supper with Ross.
And today I will probably see God in cookie dough, cardboard boxes, paperwork, phone calls, and whatever else ends up on my list.
Because maybe that's the point.
God isn't only found in the quiet moments.
He is found in the busy ones too.
He is there when we're praying over our Bible.
He is there when we're teaching children.
He is there when we're washing dishes.
He is there when we're filling out paperwork.
He is there when we're tired.
He is there when we're waiting.
He is there when we're wondering what comes next.
And He is there when we finally stop trying to control everything and say,
“Okay, God. Here we are. Let's do this together.”
Walking It Out Today
So today, I'm going to try something different.
I'm going to do what I can do and trust God with what I cannot.
If I start worrying about what other people think, I'll remember that people-pleasing can become a trap.
If anxiety starts creeping in, I'll run to my machaseh—my refuge.
If there is something inside me that needs healing, I'll bring it to the God who can rapha, heal and restore.
And through all of it, I'll practice gratitude.
Because I don't know what God has planned for today.
I don't know exactly how everything will work out.
But I do know who is walking through it with me.
And that's enough for today.
Maybe you don't know what your day holds either.
Maybe your list is long.
Maybe you're waiting for an answer.
Maybe you're carrying something nobody else can see.
Maybe you're tired of trying to keep everything together.
Friend, take a breath.
You don't have to know the whole plan.
You just have to trust the One who does.
God is your refuge.
God is your strength.
God is your healer.
God is your protector.
And His faithful love endures forever.
So let's stop trying to live for the approval of the world and start living from the security of knowing we belong to God.
Do what He puts in front of you today.
Trust Him with the rest.
And when the day is over, look back and find the places where God was walking beside you.
I have a feeling we'll find Him everywhere.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for meeting us right in the middle of our busy, messy, ordinary lives.
Forgive us for the times we become so concerned about what other people think that we forget whose we are. Help us not to become trapped by people-pleasing, comparison, fear, or the pressure to keep up with the world around us.
Teach us to trust You.
When life feels overwhelming, remind us that You are our machaseh, our refuge and shelter.
When we are hurting, remind us that we can bring those hurts honestly to You.
When we don't know what comes next, help us remember that You already know.
Give us wisdom to know what is ours to do and faith to leave the rest in Your hands.
Thank You for every little blessing we sometimes overlook—the people You place in our lives, the opportunities to serve, the children who make us laugh, the meals we share, the work You give us to do, and even the strength to get through another busy day.
Help us live today with grateful hearts.
Let our lives point others toward You—not because we have everything figured out, but because we know the One who walks with us through everything.
We love You, Lord.
Thank You for loving us first.
In Jesus' name,
Amen. ❤️
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
And the power,
And the glory,
Forever and ever.
Amen.
BELIEVE, OBEY, BE BLESSED AMEN BOBBA ❤️
Love, Penny 💛
