FINDING QUIET PURPOSE IN A LOUD WORLD

Have you ever felt like you're running on a treadmill that someone else is controlling? You know the one I'm talking about! The laundry keeps piling up, the to-do list seems to grow overnight, and just when you think you can finally sit down, you remember three more things that need doing.

Our minds can be just as busy as our schedules. Sometimes we're thinking about what we need to do, what we haven't finished, what we should have done yesterday, and what absolutely must be done tomorrow. Before we know it, we're exhausted without having taken a single step!

So, how do we find peace in the middle of all that noise? How do we know whether we're using our time wisely, serving God faithfully, and making the right choices?

Let's pull up a chair, take a breath, and talk about it. Because if there's one thing I've learned, it's that walking with God doesn't mean we have to keep moving every minute of every day.

Sometimes, we need to be still.

STEP 1: JUST BREATHE

“Be still, and know that I am God!” — Psalm 46:10

Oh, those words sound so simple, don't they? Be still.

But for some of us, being still can be one of the hardest things to do!

We see something that needs fixing, someone who needs help, a job that needs finishing, or a ministry opportunity that needs our attention. Our hearts want to jump right in. We want to help, serve, and make a difference. Those are good things, but even good things can become overwhelming when we forget that we're human beings, not human doings!

Being still isn't simply about sitting quietly in a chair. It's about surrendering our need to control everything. It's about remembering that God is still God when we aren't working, fixing, organizing, or helping someone else.

The world will keep turning while we rest. The dishes might still be there tomorrow, the leaves won't magically disappear, and that to-do list may not get any shorter. But none of those things determines our worth in God's eyes.

Sometimes, the most faithful thing we can do is stop, breathe, pray, and trust Him.

STEP 2: REMEMBER THAT OUR TIME IS A GIFT

“Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12

Life moves quickly, doesn't it? One minute we're young and dreaming about the future, and the next we're looking back at the years wondering where they went.

Moses understood that our days are precious. He asked God to teach His people to recognize the value of their time so they could live with wisdom.

The Hebrew word ḥokmāh (חָכְמָה) means wisdom—the ability to live with understanding and make choices that honor God.

Wisdom helps us recognize that not everything demanding our attention deserves our attention right now.

Some things are urgent. Some things are important. Some things can wait. And some things simply aren't ours to carry.

We can spend so much time worrying about what we haven't accomplished that we forget to thank God for what we have been given today.

Our time is a gift, but so is our health, our family, our church, our friendships, and the opportunity to love the people God places in our path.

Let's not become so busy trying to make every moment productive that we forget to enjoy the blessings already sitting right in front of us.

STEP 3: LOOK BACK AND REMEMBER HOW FAR GOD HAS BROUGHT YOU

“Who am I, O Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?” — 2 Samuel 7:18

I love David's response here. He wasn't standing before God bragging about everything he had accomplished. He sat before the Lord in wonder and gratitude.

He recognized that his journey wasn't simply the result of his own efforts. God's faithfulness had brought him this far.

And, friends, isn't that something we need to remember?

When Ross and I look back over our lives, we can see plenty of places where we didn't know what tomorrow would bring. We've experienced difficult seasons, disappointments, and circumstances that seemed bigger than anything we could handle. Yet here we are, still walking with God, still serving His people, and still finding reasons to be grateful.

We haven't always understood His timing. We haven't always liked the road we were traveling. And goodness knows we've had days when we wondered how we were going to get through the next one!

But looking back reminds us that God has been faithful even when we couldn't see what He was doing.

The Hebrew word ḥesed (חֶסֶד) describes God's steadfast love, kindness, and faithfulness. It's a beautiful reminder that His love isn't dependent on how productive we are or how well we manage our lives.

Sometimes, we need to stop looking at how far we still have to go and thank Him for how far He's already brought us.

STEP 4: LISTEN TO GOD ABOVE THE NOISE

“Since we believe human testimony, surely we can believe the greater testimony that comes from God.” — 1 John 5:9

We live in a world full of opinions about what success looks like.

We're told to work harder, accomplish more, keep up with everyone else, and never let anybody see us slow down. Sometimes, without even realizing it, we begin measuring our worth by our accomplishments.

But what happens when our bodies tell us to rest? What happens when life interrupts our plans? What happens when we simply cannot do everything we believe needs to be done?

Are we somehow less valuable?

Absolutely not!

God's truth doesn't change because our circumstances change. Our value doesn't disappear when our productivity slows down.

This verse specifically points us toward God's testimony about His Son, Jesus Christ. Our faith rests on what God has revealed about Jesus, not on the ever-changing opinions of the world.

And as we learn to trust God's Word, we also learn to recognize that our limitations aren't a reason to feel ashamed.

We can work faithfully without believing we must work endlessly. We can serve joyfully without believing that every need is ours to meet.

We belong to God, and we can trust Him to guide us in knowing when to say yes and when we need to say not today.

STEP 5: REMEMBER THAT THE LITTLE THINGS MATTER

“He will judge everyone according to what they have done.” — Romans 2:6

Now, let's be clear about something. We don't earn our salvation by doing enough good deeds. We are saved by God's grace, and our good works are a response to His love.

But our choices matter.

The way we treat people matters. The kindness we offer when nobody is watching matters. The patience we show when we're tired matters. The willingness to forgive, encourage, listen, and help matters.

God sees the things the world overlooks.

He sees the volunteer who shows up week after week. He sees the person who quietly prepares a meal for someone who needs it. He sees the caregiver who keeps going through a difficult season and the person who offers a kind word when someone else is struggling.

And He also sees the person who has finally recognized that they need to rest.

We don't have to accomplish something spectacular every day to live faithfully. Sometimes, obedience means stepping forward. Sometimes, it means stepping back and allowing God to care for us, too.

STEP 6: MAKE THE ORDINARY EXTRAORDINARY

“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” — 1 Corinthians 10:31

Here is where everything comes together!

Paul reminds us that glorifying God isn't reserved for Sunday mornings, church services, or the big moments in life.

We can glorify God while washing dishes, preparing supper, folding laundry, caring for our families, visiting a neighbor, or volunteering at the local food cupboard.

We can glorify Him through the way we speak to people, the decisions we make, and the attitude we carry into ordinary situations.

The Greek word doxa (δόξα) means glory, honor, or splendor. To do something for God's glory is to live in a way that honors Him and reflects something of His goodness to others.

And that brings me to something Ross and I are learning all over again.

We love serving God's people. Our volunteer work at the food cupboard is important to us, and we look forward to helping whenever we can. There is something special about working alongside others to meet a practical need and show people that they matter.

But yesterday, Ross's worsening back pain meant we had to make a different choice.

His doctor gave him medication and advised him to rest, with a follow-up appointment in two weeks if he isn't improving. Physical therapy may be needed, and if the pain continues, further testing may be considered.

Ross was disappointed. He had a whole list of things he wanted to accomplish, including clearing leaves from around the pantry building today.

But instead of pushing through the pain, he stayed home.

Was that easy? Not particularly!

When your heart wants to serve, sitting still can feel like you're letting somebody down. But caring for the body God has given us is important, too.

The food cupboard will continue its work. Other hands can help with the leaves. And Ross needs an opportunity to heal.

We sometimes need to remind ourselves that God doesn't measure our faithfulness by how much we accomplish in a day. He looks at our hearts, our obedience, and our willingness to trust Him.

There will be days when we can do four hours of volunteer work, and there will be days when we need to stay home and rest. Both kinds of days can be lived for His glory.

And here's something else worth remembering: allowing others to serve when we cannot is also part of being a church family. We don't have to do everything ourselves. God gives different people different gifts, and we can trust Him to work through all of us.

So today, whether you're busy serving, quietly recovering, caring for someone you love, or simply trying to make it through the day, remember this:

You don't have to prove your worth by staying busy.

You don't have to finish every item on your to-do list to be faithful.

And you don't have to feel guilty when wisdom tells you to rest.

God is still at work when we're working, and God is still at work when we're resting.

Our purpose isn't to keep ourselves constantly busy. Our purpose is to love God, love others, and honor Him in whatever season we're walking through.

Sometimes that means rolling up our sleeves.

Sometimes it means folding our hands in prayer.

And sometimes it means putting our feet up, taking our medication as directed, and letting tomorrow take care of itself!

So, friends, let's ask ourselves a question today: Am I doing what God is asking me to do, or am I simply doing everything I can think of?

There is a difference.

Let's learn to recognize it, trust God's direction, and give ourselves permission to be still.

God isn't finished with us yet, but that doesn't mean we have to do everything today!

LET'S PRAY TOGETHER

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of another day and for the many opportunities You give us to serve You by serving others. Thank You for the people You place in our lives, the work You allow us to do, and the blessings we sometimes overlook because we're too busy to notice them.

Lord, teach us to be still and recognize that You are God. Help us distinguish between what truly needs our attention and what can wait. Give us wisdom to use our time well, humility to recognize our limitations, and faith to trust You when our plans change.

Please be with those who are hurting today, especially those struggling with pain, illness, exhaustion, or disappointment. Give them comfort, healing, patience, and peace. Help us remember that resting isn't a failure and that we don't have to carry every burden alone.

Lord, please help Ross's back improve. Give his doctor wisdom in caring for him, and help Ross be patient with the healing process. When his mind fills with all the things he wants to accomplish, remind him that he doesn't have to do everything today. Help both of us recognize when to serve and when to rest.

Bless our food cupboard, our church family, and everyone working to care for others. Strengthen those who serve faithfully, provide for those in need, and help us work together with loving hearts.

May our ordinary moments become opportunities to glorify You. Whether we're busy working or quietly resting, let our lives reflect Your love.

Thank You for bringing us this far, Father. We trust You with today, tomorrow, and every day ahead.

In the precious name of Jesus, we pray.

Amen.

THE LORD'S PRAYER (KJV)

Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.

Amen.

A LITTLE SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT TODAY

What is one thing on your to-do list that you could postpone without guilt, so you can give your attention to something—or someone—that matters more?

And if your body is asking you to slow down, are you willing to listen?

For me, today's purpose includes writing these daily devotions and serving alongside our church family at the local food cupboard. But I've also been reminded that serving God doesn't mean ignoring our own needs or pushing the people we love beyond their limits.

Ross and I are learning that we can be faithful servants without being able to do it all.

Your turn, friends! What is one ordinary thing you can do today to bring glory to God? And if today is a day when you need to rest, can you thank Him for that opportunity, too?

Let's encourage one another to serve with willing hearts, rest without guilt, and trust God with the things we cannot accomplish today.

BELIEVE, OBEY, BE BLESSED AMEN BOBBA ❤️
