Driven by Devotion, Protected by Grace
Life has a way of moving fast.
Between the endless things on our to-do lists, the noise of the world, unexpected problems, financial worries, family concerns, health issues, and all the things we never saw coming, it is easy to feel scattered.
Sometimes it feels like we are running from one thing to the next just trying to keep up.
I know Ross and I have certainly had days like that. Actually, we've had enough of them to know that if we try to carry everything ourselves, we're going to wear ourselves out pretty quickly!
But when we slow down and look at God's Word, something beautiful happens.
Several different Scriptures begin to fit together like pieces of a puzzle. They give us a pattern for how to walk through life—not by pretending everything is easy, but by knowing where our strength comes from.
Rest.
Receive.
Prepare.
Act.
It begins with finding our footing in God, resting in His presence, trusting that He will carry us, preparing our hearts and minds for the battles of the day, and then stepping out to live with purpose.
Let's take a look.
Be Still Before You Do Anything Else
Psalm 46:10 says:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
There is something about those words that speaks directly to a busy, worried heart.
Be still.
Not “figure everything out.”
Not “fix everything.”
Not “make sure everyone else is okay before you take care of yourself.”
Just be still.
The phrase carries the idea of letting go and ceasing our striving. In other words, sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do is stop trying so hard to control what was never ours to control in the first place.
God is saying, Let go. I am God.
How many times have we carried something around in our minds all day long, worrying about how it will work out?
We think through every possible scenario. We make plans, backup plans, and sometimes backup plans for our backup plans!
I think most of us can relate.
But peace begins when we remember who is actually in control.
We don't have to understand everything to trust Someone who does.
Stay Close to the One Who Protects You
Psalm 91:1 says:
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.”
Notice that it says dwells.
It doesn't say we visit God's presence only when we're in trouble.
It doesn't say we run to Him when everything falls apart and then wander away again when life gets comfortable.
We dwell.
We stay.
We make our home in Him.
Think about a shadow. You have to be close enough to something for its shadow to cover you.
That is such a beautiful picture of our relationship with God.
When life gets hot, overwhelming, or frightening, we don't have to stand out in the middle of it alone. We can draw close to the One whose presence covers us.
And sometimes that means simply sitting quietly and saying, “Lord, I don't know what to do, but You do.”
That's enough.
God Isn't Finished Carrying Us
Then we come to Isaiah 46:4:
“Even to your old age and gray hairs, I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.”
I love this promise because God isn't talking about carrying us only when we're young, strong, healthy, energetic, and able to handle everything ourselves.
He says He will carry us through every season.
He carried us through yesterday.
He is carrying us through today.
And He will carry us into tomorrow.
Our age doesn't scare God.
Our weaknesses don't scare Him.
Our mistakes don't scare Him.
Our circumstances don't scare Him.
Our future doesn't surprise Him.
The God who created us knows exactly what we need.
Ross and I have had plenty of opportunities to learn this one the hard way. There are circumstances in our lives that we simply cannot control, and there are days when we don't know what tomorrow will look like.
But we keep coming back to this truth:
God has never asked us to carry ourselves.
He says, “I will carry you.”
What a promise.
Put on Your Armor
But resting in God doesn't mean we won't have battles.
We still live in a world filled with distractions, discouragement, fear, temptation, doubt, and plenty of voices telling us things that simply aren't true.
That's why Ephesians 6:17 tells us to:
“Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
The helmet protects the head, and Paul uses that picture for a reason.
We need to guard our minds.
Because sometimes the biggest battle isn't happening around us.
It's happening inside our own heads.
The enemy would love for us to believe we're hopeless.
That we're alone.
That God has forgotten us.
That our past defines us.
That we're not good enough.
That our circumstances are bigger than our God.
But God's Word tells us something different.
We are His.
We are loved.
We are not forgotten.
We are not abandoned.
And our circumstances do not get the final word.
The sword of the Spirit—the Word of God—is truth we can hold onto when everything around us feels uncertain.
We don't have to fight every lie with our own strength.
We answer lies with truth.
Now It's Time to Step Out
And this brings us to the next part of the journey.
God doesn't call us to rest in Him so that we can remain frozen in place.
He restores us so that we can move forward.
Hosea 10:12 says:
“Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord.”
Fallow ground is soil that has been left untouched. Over time, it becomes hard.
And honestly, our hearts can become like that too.
Disappointment can harden us.
Fear can harden us.
Anger can harden us.
Weariness can harden us.
Sometimes life hurts us so much that we begin protecting ourselves instead of trusting God.
But God says, Break up that ground.
Let Me soften those places.
Let Me work in the places you've been avoiding.
Let Me plant something new.
Then He tells us to sow righteousness.
In other words, don't just talk about faith.
Live it.
Show kindness.
Forgive.
Help someone.
Encourage someone who is struggling.
Give when you can.
Serve when you're able.
Pray for somebody who needs prayer.
Open your heart instead of closing it.
Sometimes the greatest evidence that God is working in us is what begins to grow through us.
And the beautiful promise is that when we sow righteousness, we reap steadfast love.
God is not asking us to produce the harvest ourselves.
He's asking us to be willing to plant.
Whatever You Do, Do It for the Lord
Colossians 3:23 gives us another practical piece of the puzzle:
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”
Whatever you do.
That means the little things count too.
Washing dishes counts.
Taking care of the animals counts.
Helping someone unload a delivery counts.
Going to a doctor's appointment counts.
Cooking a meal counts.
Showing up when you're tired counts.
Serving at church counts.
Taking care of your family counts.
Doing something nobody notices still counts.
We don't have to wait for some enormous opportunity to serve God.
We can serve Him right where we are.
Ross and I have learned that life isn't always made up of big, dramatic moments. Sometimes it is simply putting one foot in front of the other, doing what needs to be done, trusting God with what we cannot do, and thanking Him for the strength to do what we can.
And that's okay.
Because when we do ordinary things with extraordinary love for God, even the ordinary becomes an act of worship.
The Roadmap for Today
When I put all these Scriptures together, I see a simple roadmap for living.
Be still.
Stop striving long enough to remember that God is God.
Dwell.
Stay close to Him instead of running from Him when life gets difficult.
Trust.
Remember that the God who created you will carry you through every season.
Guard your mind.
Put on the helmet of salvation and fill your heart with God's truth.
Break up the hard ground.
Let God work on the places in your heart that have become wounded, weary, or hardened.
Sow righteousness.
Let your faith become visible through the way you live and treat others.
Work wholeheartedly.
Whatever is in front of you today, do it for the Lord.
And then keep moving forward.
Not because we have everything figured out.
Not because life is suddenly easy.
But because we know the One who goes with us.
There will be days when we feel strong and days when we feel completely exhausted.
There will be days when the path is clear and days when we can't see five feet in front of us.
There will be days when our prayers seem to be answered immediately and days when we have to wait.
But through every one of them, God remains faithful.
So today, don't try to carry the whole world.
Be still.
Stay close.
Let God carry what is too heavy for you.
Guard your mind with His truth.
And then get up and go live the life He has placed in front of you.
There is work to do.
There are people who need encouragement.
There are hearts that need love.
There are seeds waiting to be planted.
And there is a God who is not finished with you yet.
So let's keep going.
One step.
One prayer.
One act of obedience.
One day at a time.
Driven by devotion. Protected by grace. And carried by the God who has never let us go.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding us that we don't have to carry everything ourselves.
When life becomes overwhelming, help us to be still and remember that You are God.
Teach us to dwell in Your presence instead of allowing fear to take over our minds. Help us trust You with our future, our families, our finances, our health, our responsibilities, and all the things we cannot control.
Guard our minds with the truth of Your salvation. When lies and discouragement creep in, help us recognize them and replace them with Your Word.
Lord, break up any hard ground in our hearts. Heal the places where disappointment, fear, anger, or weariness have taken root. Give us hearts that are willing to forgive, love, serve, and obey.
And when You call us to step out, give us the courage to go.
Help us remember that even the smallest things we do in love can be an offering to You.
We especially ask You to continue walking with Ross and me through every part of this crazy life we share. Give us strength for each day, wisdom for every decision, and peace when we don't know what comes next.
Thank You for carrying us when we are too tired to carry ourselves.
We love You, Lord, and we trust You.
In Jesus' precious name,
Amen.
The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done in earth,
As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power,
and the glory,
forever.
Amen.
BELIEVE, OBEY, BE BLESSED AMEN BOBBA ❤️
