The Divine Cycle of Filling, Renewing and Outpouring

The Divine Cycle of Filling, Renewing, and Outpouring

Scripture Readings — NLT

“Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.” — Psalm 107:8

“But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.” — Isaiah 40:31

“You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.” — Matthew 22:37

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him.” — Romans 15:13

The Divine Cycle of Filling, Renewing, and Outpouring

Have you ever noticed how difficult it is to pour something out of an empty container?

It sounds obvious, doesn't it? Yet sometimes we expect ourselves to keep giving, loving, serving, encouraging, forgiving, and showing grace when we are completely drained.

God never intended us to live that way.

These four Scriptures create a beautiful picture of the Christian life:

God satisfies us.

God renews us.

God fills us with hope.

And then His love flows through us to others.

It is a divine cycle of filling, renewing, and outpouring.

The Depth of Our Hunger — Psalm 107:8–9

Psalm 107 describes people who were wandering through a desert, hungry and thirsty, searching for a place to belong.

What a picture of the human heart.

The Hebrew word saba, used for being satisfied, carries the idea of being filled or satisfied abundantly. God doesn't simply give us enough to survive the day. He satisfies the deepest longings of our souls.

How many things have we tried to use to fill that empty place?

Success.

Money.

Relationships.

Recognition.

Material things.

The approval of other people.

And yet, somehow, we can have everything we thought we wanted and still feel empty.

Ross and I know something about empty places.

We have walked through seasons when we didn't know what tomorrow would bring. We've experienced loss, disappointment, uncertainty, and seasons when life felt far different from what we had imagined.

But through every season, God has continued to teach us something:

People and circumstances can change. God does not.

When we finally stop trying to fill ourselves with everything the world offers and allow God to satisfy our souls, we discover that He is the only One who can truly fill us.

The Mechanics of Waiting — Isaiah 40:31

Isaiah tells us that those who wait on the Lord will find new strength.

The Hebrew word qavah carries the idea of waiting with expectation, looking eagerly toward something, and hoping in the Lord.

Biblical waiting isn't simply sitting around doing nothing.

It is trusting while we wait.

It is saying:

"God, I don't understand this, but I trust You."

"I don't know what tomorrow holds, but You do."

"I don't have the strength for this, but You do."

That is where renewal begins.

Sometimes God doesn't immediately change our circumstances. Instead, He changes us in the middle of them.

He takes our weakness and teaches us to depend upon His strength.

Ross and I have learned that lesson repeatedly.

There have been mountains in our lives that were much harder to climb than Haystack Mountain will ever be.

But God has carried us up those mountains one step at a time.

And maybe that's why I love the picture of climbing a mountain.

We don't have to leap from the bottom to the top.

We simply take the next step.

And then the next.

And then the next.

God gives us strength for today's step.

The Vertical and Horizontal Flow of Love — Matthew 22:37–39

When Jesus was asked which commandment was the greatest, He brought everything down to two commands:

Love God.

Love people.

There is a beautiful connection between the two.

Our relationship with God is vertical.

Our relationship with people is horizontal.

And when the vertical relationship is healthy, God's love begins to flow horizontally into our relationships with others.

We cannot consistently pour out God's love when we refuse to allow Him to pour into us.

And if we say we love God while continually mistreating the people around us, something is out of alignment.

God's love changes how we speak.

It changes how we forgive.

It changes how we serve.

It changes how we look at the person who is difficult to love.

And, believe me, God has given Ross and me plenty of opportunities to practice that one!

After all these years together, we've learned that love isn't always about agreeing.

Sometimes love means choosing grace.

Sometimes it means saying, "I'm sorry."

Sometimes it means listening.

Sometimes it means giving each other room.

And sometimes it means laughing together when life gets absolutely ridiculous.

But most importantly, we've learned that we need God's love flowing into us before we can faithfully pour it into one another and into the people God places around us.

When Hope Overflows — Romans 15:13

Romans 15:13 calls God the God of hope.

I love that.

Not the God of temporary hope.

Not the God of wishful thinking.

The God of hope.

Paul prays that God would fill believers with joy and peace as they trust Him so that they would overflow with hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Greek word perisseuo, translated as "overflow," carries the idea of abundance—having more than enough, exceeding what is necessary.

That means God doesn't merely want to give us enough hope to get through the day.

He wants His hope to overflow from our lives.

And when something overflows, it doesn't stay contained.

It spills out.

That's the picture Paul gives us.

God fills us.

His Spirit renews us.

His joy and peace grow within us.

And eventually, what He has placed inside us begins spilling over onto everyone around us.

Putting It All Together

Think of it as a daily blueprint:

PSALM 107:9

God satisfies our hungry souls.

⬇️

ISAIAH 40:31

God renews our strength as we wait and trust in Him.

⬇️

ROMANS 15:13

God fills us with joy, peace, and hope.

⬇️

MATTHEW 22:37–39

God's love overflows from us into the lives of others.

And that brings us to a very important truth:

You cannot continually pour out what you refuse to allow God to pour into you.

If you are exhausted today, perhaps you don't need to try harder.

Perhaps you need to get quiet.

Perhaps you need to pray.

Perhaps you need to open God's Word.

Perhaps you need to stop carrying something that God never asked you to carry alone.

Perhaps you simply need to sit with Him and say,

"Lord, fill me again."

Today, Ross and I are going to climb Haystack Mountain.

I can't think of a better way to live out this message.

We'll step away from the busyness of life and spend some time outside in the beautiful world God created. As we climb, I know there will be moments when our legs get tired and the mountain feels a little steeper than we expected.

But isn't that just like life?

Sometimes the climb is difficult.

Sometimes we need to stop and catch our breath.

Sometimes we need to encourage one another.

And sometimes we simply need to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

But when we reach the top and look around at God's creation, I hope we'll remember something:

The God who created that mountain is bigger than every mountain we've ever faced.

He has been faithful through our story.

Through the valleys.

Through the disappointments.

Through the broken places.

Through the seasons when we didn't know how we would make it.

And through every mountain, He has continued to fill us, renew us, and give us another reason to hope.

So today, don't try to live from an empty heart.

Go back to the Source.

Let God satisfy you.

Let Him renew you.

Let Him fill you with hope.

And then let His love overflow from your life into someone else's.

Because that is the divine cycle:

Filled by God.

Renewed by God.

Overflowing because of God.

And there is always enough of Him for another day.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being the One who satisfies our deepest hunger and gives strength to our weary souls.

There are times when we feel completely empty. We try to keep going, keep serving, keep loving, and keep doing everything that needs to be done, while forgetting that we cannot do it in our own strength.

Forgive us for trying to carry what belongs in Your hands.

Teach us to wait on You with expectation. Renew our strength when we are weary. Fill our hearts with Your joy, Your peace, and Your hope.

Lord, let Your love flow through us.

Help us love You with everything we have and love the people You place in our lives—even when loving them is difficult.

Thank You for walking with Ross and me through every mountain, every valley, every disappointment, and every beautiful moment. Thank You for never abandoning us and for continuing to write our story when we couldn't see what the next chapter would hold.

As we enjoy Your beautiful creation today, remind us that every mountain points back to the greatness of the One who created it.

May we never forget that You are greater than anything we will ever face.

Fill us today, Lord.

Renew us today.

And then help us overflow with Your love.

In Jesus' precious name,

Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

And the power,

And the glory,

Forever and ever.

Amen.

BELIEVE. OBEY. BE BLESSED.

AMEN.

BOBBA ❤️

Love, Penny 💛
