The Wonder-Working Power of the Blood

Revelation 12:10-11

Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens, 

“It has come at last— 

    salvation and power 

and the Kingdom of our God, 

    and the authority of his Christ. 

For the accuser of our brothers and sisters 

    has been thrown down to earth— 

the one who accuses them 

    before our God day and night.

And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb 

    and by their testimony. 

And they did not love their lives so much 

    that they were afraid to die.

Romans 5:9

And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation.

1 John 1:7

But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

Hebrews 9:22

In fact, according to the law of Moses, nearly everything was purified with blood. For without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.

Hebrews 9:14

Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.

Hebrews 10:19

And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus.

Ephesians 1:7

He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.

1 Peter 1:18-19

For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value.

It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.

One of the great hymns of the faith asks the question:

"Would you be free from the burden of sin? There's power in the blood."

Those words are not simply beautiful poetry. They proclaim a life-changing truth. There truly is wonder-working power in the blood of Jesus Christ. His blood justifies us, cleanses us, redeems us, grants us access to God, and gives us victory over every accusation of the enemy.

As I reflect on these Scriptures, I cannot help but think about my own life and the journey Ross and I have walked. There was a time when we knew about God, but we were not truly leaning on Him. Like so many people, we relied on our own understanding, our own plans, our own strength, and our own desires. We drifted into a life centered more on ourselves than on the Lord.

Then life happened.

The plans we trusted failed. The security we depended upon disappeared. We found ourselves homeless, broken, afraid, and desperately searching for hope. Looking back now, I can see that God never left us, but He allowed us to come to the end of ourselves so we could discover that He was enough.

When everything else was stripped away, we learned a lesson that changed our lives forever:

Jesus is not merely one of our options—He is our only hope.

We rededicated our lives completely to Him. We stopped trying to carry our burdens alone and began resting our full weight upon God. We discovered what Proverbs 3:5 truly means:

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding."

The Hebrew word for trust is batach, meaning to throw oneself completely upon another for safety and security. The word for lean is shaan, meaning to rest your full weight upon something.

For years we leaned on ourselves.

Today we strive to lean on Him.

And what a faithful God He has proven Himself to be.

The same God who met us in homelessness has blessed us with a home. Not only do we have a home, but by God's grace we own it free and clear. Paid in full.

Every time I think about that phrase, I am reminded of something even greater.

Our home may be paid in full, but our souls are paid in full too.

Not by our efforts.

Not by our goodness.

Not by our church attendance.

But by the precious blood of Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 1:7 tells us:

"He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins."

The Greek word for redemption is apolutrosis, meaning to release a prisoner or slave by paying a ransom price.

Jesus paid the ransom.

The debt is gone.

The chains are broken.

The price has been paid in full.

Romans 5:9 teaches that we have been justified by His blood. The Greek word dikaioō means "to declare righteous" or "to acquit." God is not overlooking our sins. He is declaring us righteous because Jesus already paid the penalty.

When the enemy accuses us of our past, God points to the blood.

When Satan reminds us of our failures, God points to the blood.

When shame tries to creep back into our hearts, God points to the blood.

The blood is Heaven's receipt that the debt has already been settled.

Yet the power of the blood does not stop at salvation.

The blood continues to cleanse us daily.

1 John 1:7 says:

"The blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin."

The Greek word katharizō is written in a continuous tense. It describes ongoing cleansing. Jesus is not only the Savior who washed us once; He is continually cleansing, restoring, and renewing us as we walk with Him.

This truth connects beautifully with what our Bible study group is learning from Emotionally Healthy Spirituality.

Peter Scazzero reminds us that we can spend our lives doing things for God while neglecting to simply be with God.

Martha was busy serving.

Mary sat at the feet of Jesus.

Jesus said Mary chose the better thing.

I believe many Christians know facts about God but never truly know Him personally.

The New Testament uses two different words for knowing.

Eido means knowing information.

Ginosko means knowing through experience, intimacy, and relationship.

God does not simply want us to know about Him.

He wants us to know Him.

That relationship is developed during the quiet moments. It grows when we stop rushing, stop striving, stop performing, and simply sit in His presence.

When Ross and I were struggling through some of the hardest seasons of our lives, it wasn't more activity that saved us.

It was more surrender.

It was learning to stop running ahead of God and start resting in God.

It was learning to trust Him before we saw the answer.

It was learning to pray before we panicked.

It was learning to sit quietly and remember that He was still God even when our circumstances screamed otherwise.

That is where trust grows.

Not in frantic emergencies.

But in daily surrender.

Not in occasional church attendance.

But in continual communion.

Not in knowing facts.

But in developing ginosko—an intimate relationship with our Savior.

Because of the blood of Jesus, Hebrews 10:19 tells us that we can enter God's presence boldly. We do not have to approach Him in fear. We do not have to hide in shame. We can come confidently before our Heavenly Father because Christ has made a way.

And because of the blood, Revelation 12:11 declares:

"They have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony."

The Greek word nikaō means to conquer completely and carry away the victory.

Notice that believers overcome through two things:

The blood of the Lamb.

And the word of their testimony.

The blood is what Jesus has done.

The testimony is what Jesus has done in us.

And that is why our stories matter.

Ross and I have a testimony.

We know what it means to wander.

We know what it means to struggle.

We know what it means to lose everything.

But we also know what it means to experience the faithfulness of God.

The God who carried us through homelessness.

The God who restored our lives.

The God who gave us a home.

The God who continues to provide every day.

The God who paid our eternal debt in full through the blood of His Son.

There truly is wonder-working power in the blood.

It justifies us legally.

It cleanses us continually.

It grants us access boldly.

It empowers us victoriously.

And it reminds us daily that what we could never pay for ourselves has already been paid in full by Jesus Christ.

Praise God for the blood!

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the precious blood of Jesus that was shed for our salvation. Thank You for redeeming us, forgiving us, cleansing us, and giving us victory over sin and death. Thank You for carrying us through seasons of failure, hardship, homelessness, fear, and uncertainty. Thank You for teaching us to stop leaning on our own understanding and to trust You completely.

Help us move beyond simply knowing about You and into a deeper relationship with You. Teach us to sit quietly at Your feet, to listen for Your voice, and to rest our full weight upon Your faithfulness. May our testimony always point others to Your goodness, Your grace, and the power of the blood of Jesus.

Thank You for every blessing You have given us, both earthly and eternal. Most of all, thank You that our debt of sin has been paid in full through Jesus Christ our Lord.
