The Cost of Freedom in Christ

The Cost of Freedom in Christ!

Romans 6:14 (NLT)

"Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God's grace."

2 Corinthians 3:17 (NLT)

"For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom."

John 14:16–17 (NLT)

"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn't looking for him and doesn't recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you."

Isaiah 43:18–19 (NLT)

"But forget all that—it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland."

The Cost of True Freedom

Freedom is one of God's greatest gifts, but it did not come cheaply. Our freedom was purchased by the precious blood of Jesus Christ on the cross. Because of His sacrifice, sin is no longer our master, and we now live under the amazing grace of God.

True freedom, however, is never simply about doing what we want. Biblical freedom is the ability to become who God created us to be. It frees us to love, forgive, serve, and reflect Christ to a hurting world.

In God's eyes, every person is created in His image. Every life has immeasurable worth. Because of that, our freedom is connected to how we treat others.

When one person is mistreated, ignored, or pushed aside, the body of Christ suffers. Freedom is never meant to be selfish. Jesus didn't set us free so we could live only for ourselves. He set us free so we could become His hands and feet, bringing hope, mercy, and justice wherever He sends us.

The Holy Spirit—the Advocate Jesus promised—lives within every believer. He gently convicts us when our attitudes become hardened, our words become careless, or our hearts become divided. He leads us into truth, reminding us that God's Kingdom is built on humility, love, and grace.

Isaiah reminds us not to dwell on the former things. Sometimes those "former things" are painful memories. Sometimes they are old prejudices, broken relationships, or long-held grudges. God invites us to let go of what keeps us chained so He can do something new in us.

When we surrender our past to Christ, He gives us new vision, new compassion, and new purpose.

A Deeper Look

The original biblical languages add beautiful richness to these passages.

Grace (Greek: Charis — χάρις) speaks of God's undeserved favor freely given to us. It is not merely forgiveness—it is the power God gives us to live differently.

Freedom (Greek: Eleutheria — ἐλευθερία) means liberty from bondage. It is freedom from sin's control so we may joyfully walk with Christ.

Promise (Greek: Epangelia — ἐπαγγελία) reminds us that God always keeps His Word. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit, and He faithfully fulfilled that promise.

The Hebrew thought behind "do not dwell" in Isaiah calls us not to remain trapped in yesterday's failures or hurts. Instead, God asks us to lift our eyes and see the new work He is already beginning.

Living Out Our Freedom

God calls us to put our freedom into action.

We can listen with compassion before speaking.

We can encourage instead of condemning.

We can forgive as Christ forgave us.

We can welcome those who feel forgotten.

We can feed the hungry, comfort the lonely, visit the sick, and pray with those who are hurting.

As a church family, we have many opportunities to live out this freedom every week. Whether serving in our Food Cupboard, loving children through Children's Tribe and Vacation Bible School, enjoying fellowship at Family Karaoke Night or our Second Sunday Coffee Hour, growing together in Bible Study, serving on the Dream Team, or simply offering a smile and a helping hand to someone in need, each act of service reflects the freedom Christ has given us.

These ministries are more than activities. They are living expressions of God's grace. They remind our community that freedom in Christ always leads us to love others.

Even when we disagree on earthly matters, we can choose to honor one another because every person bears God's image. We can listen with kindness, speak with humility, and remember that our unity in Christ is greater than any difference that may divide us.

Politics cannot save a soul.

Arguments cannot heal a broken heart.

Only Jesus can do that.

The greatest freedom we will ever experience is knowing Him, walking with Him, and allowing His Spirit to transform us day by day.

May we never use our freedom for selfish ambition, but instead as an opportunity to glorify God by serving one another in love.

That is the beautiful cost—and blessing—of true freedom.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the incredible gift of freedom purchased for us through the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You that sin no longer has power over us because Your grace is greater than our failures.

Fill us daily with Your Holy Spirit. Help us to walk in humility, kindness, forgiveness, and love. Open our eyes to those who need encouragement, compassion, and hope. Teach us to see every person through Your eyes, remembering that each one is wonderfully created in Your image.

Help us to let go of past hurts, old fears, and anything that keeps us from becoming who You created us to be. Use our church, our families, and our community to shine Your light through acts of service, generosity, and grace.

May our freedom always point others to Jesus.

In His precious name we pray,

Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive our trespassers.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.

Amen.

BELIEVE, OBEY, BE BLESSED.

AMEN.

Love, Penny 💛
