Standing Strong in Love and Faith

Standing Strong in Love and Faith

Scripture Readings (NLT)

1 John 4:18

"Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love."

Psalm 145:14

"The Lord helps the fallen and lifts those bent beneath their loads."

1 Timothy 6:12

"Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you, which you have declared so well before many witnesses.

The Pathway from Fear to Victory

Life often feels like a series of battles. We face the weight of daily anxieties, the sting of unexpected failures, the pain of loss, and the exhaustion of trying to keep it all together. When we feel overwhelmed, fear whispers that we are alone, that we are not enough, and that our struggles will define us.

But God tells a completely different story.

Throughout Scripture, we see a beautiful progression that leads us from fear to victory. It begins with God's love, continues through His sustaining strength, and ends with a life lived courageously for Him.

1. Rest in Perfect Love

Fear paralyzes us, but 1 John 4:18 reminds us that God's perfect love drives out every anxiety. This love is not a vague emotion or a fleeting feeling. It is the unchanging, covenant love of our Heavenly Father.

When you know you are completely loved by God, you no longer have to fear failure, rejection, or the unknown future. His love is your safe harbor in every storm.

The enemy wants us to believe that one mistake will separate us from God. Jesus reminds us that His grace is greater than our failures. We obey because we are loved—not in order to be loved.

2. Lean on His Strength

Even knowing this, we still stumble.

We become weary. We carry burdens that seem impossible. We grieve. We question. We wonder if we have enough strength for another day.

That is where Psalm 145:14 brings such wonderful comfort.

God does not demand perfection before He helps us. He meets us in our weakness. He reaches beneath the crushing weight we carry and gently lifts us again.

How many times has He carried us when we didn't even realize it?

Looking back over my own life, I can see His fingerprints everywhere. There were seasons I thought I was walking alone, yet He was carrying me every step of the way. Sometimes His strength came through His Word. Sometimes through a friend. Sometimes through a church family. Sometimes through a quiet peace that made no earthly sense.

He has never stopped lifting His children.

3. Fight with Purpose

Safely held in God's love and strengthened by His hand, we are now ready to act.

Paul tells Timothy,

"Fight the good fight for the true faith."

This is not a battle fought with anger, pride, or worldly weapons.

It is the daily choice to believe God's promises when circumstances say otherwise.

It is choosing forgiveness over bitterness.

Hope over despair.

Truth over lies.

Faith over fear.

Every day we wake up, we have another opportunity to cling to Jesus and live for His Kingdom.

The victory has already been won at the Cross. We are not fighting for victory.

We are fighting from victory.

Digging Deeper into God's Word

These three passages form a beautiful progression:

Identity → Restoration → Purpose

God first reminds us who we are.

Then He restores us when we fall.

Finally, He sends us forward to faithfully live for Him.

1 John 4:18 — Perfect Love Removes Fear

The Greek word for love is agapē (ἀγάπη).

Agapē is God's unconditional, sacrificial, self-giving love. It is not based upon our performance but upon His character.

The word translated fear is phobos (φόβος).

It speaks of terror, dread, or fearful expectation.

John also uses the Greek word kolasis, meaning punishment or judgment.

Many Christians quietly live as though God is waiting for them to fail.

John says that mindset disappears as we mature in God's love.

The word teleia means complete, mature, fully developed.

As we grow closer to Jesus, fear loses its grip because we finally understand that His love is secure.

Psalm 145:14 — The God Who Stoops Down

Psalm 145 is a beautiful Hebrew acrostic celebrating God's greatness.

The Hebrew word for upholds is somekh (סוֹמֵךְ).

It means to support, sustain, or hold someone upright.

The phrase bowed down comes from khephuphim (כְּפוּפִים).

It paints the picture of someone bent over beneath an unbearable burden.

What a beautiful image of our God.

The false gods of the ancient world demanded that people carry impossible burdens.

The God of Israel bends down beneath ours.

He doesn't simply watch us struggle.

He joins us under the load until we are standing once again.

1 Timothy 6:12 — Fight the Good Fight

The Greek word agonizou (ἀγωνίζου) gives us our English word agony.

It describes the intense discipline and determination of an Olympic athlete competing with everything they have.

Paul isn't encouraging frantic striving.

He is encouraging wholehearted commitment.

The phrase take hold comes from epilabou, meaning to seize firmly and never let go.

We cling to eternal life because it already belongs to us through Christ.

We refuse to let temporary distractions rob us of eternal joy.

Practical Application

When fear whispers, remember God's love.

When weakness overwhelms you, lean on His strength.

When life becomes difficult, keep fighting the good fight of faith.

Our church family has countless opportunities to live out these truths. Whether serving at the Food Cupboard, encouraging children during Children's Tribe, helping during Vacation Bible School, sharing fellowship at Coffee Hour, serving on the Dream Team, participating in Bible Study, or simply praying with someone who is hurting, every act of love becomes evidence that Christ is alive within us. Amen!

We don't serve because we are trying to earn God's approval.

We serve because we have already received it.

Today, rest in His love.

Lean on His strength.

Fight with purpose.

Stand strong.

Jesus is holding you, walking beside you, and leading you home.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for loving us with a perfect love that casts out every fear. Forgive us for the times we allow anxiety, doubt, and discouragement to control our hearts instead of trusting You.

Thank You for lifting us when we fall and carrying us when our burdens become too heavy. Help us to remember that Your strength is made perfect in our weakness.

Teach us to fight the good fight of faith with courage, humility, and perseverance. Help us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, knowing that the victory has already been won through His death and resurrection.

May our lives reflect Your love to everyone we meet. Use us to encourage the discouraged, strengthen the weary, feed the hungry, comfort the lonely, and shine Your light into a world that desperately needs hope.

We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive our trespassers.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.

Amen.

BELIEVE. OBEY. BE BLESSED.

AMEN.

BOBBA ❤️

Love, Penny 💛
