Reflection

Life often leads us into seasons of waiting. We wait for answers, for healing, for restored relationships, for open doors, or simply for God to reveal His next step. Waiting can feel lonely. It can tempt us to become discouraged or to wonder if God has forgotten us. Yet throughout Scripture, we discover that waiting on the Lord is never wasted because our confidence rests, not in our circumstances, but in the unchanging character of God.

Psalm 145:8 reminds us that "The Lord is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love." The Hebrew word translated "unfailing love" is chesed (חֶסֶד). Chesed is one of the richest words in the Old Testament. It speaks of God's covenant love—His steadfast mercy, faithful kindness, loyal compassion, and unwavering commitment to His children. It is love that never gives up. It is love that pursues us even when we stumble. It is love that remains faithful because God Himself is faithful.

Knowing God's chesed changes everything. We no longer wait with fear; we wait with hope. We no longer wonder if God cares because His steadfast love has already answered that question. His timing may not match ours, but His heart toward us never changes.

Lamentations was written during one of Israel's darkest times, yet right in the middle of grief comes this beautiful reminder:

"The Lord is good to those who depend on Him... it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord."

Biblical waiting is not passive resignation. It is active trust. It is choosing to believe that God is working even when we cannot yet see His hand. Sometimes He is preparing the blessing. Sometimes He is preparing us to receive the blessing. Either way, He is always at work.

I have seen His faithfulness personally.

Not long ago, we were praying about something that may seem ordinary to many people—a vehicle. Yet to us it meant the ability to continue serving wherever God calls. Today our Jeep is not only running beautifully, but it is also fully legal. What an answer to prayer! Today we are thankful that we can drive to the four-church Dream Team meeting in Houlton, ready to serve alongside fellow believers. It may seem like a small blessing to some, but to us it is another reminder that God faithfully provides exactly what we need to accomplish the work He has placed before us.

God often blesses us through His people.

Ross and I have experienced the beautiful expression of chesed through our church family. Time after time they have loved us, encouraged us, prayed for us, and helped carry burdens that would have been far too heavy for us alone. Their kindness reflects the very heart of Christ. We feel deeply loved and richly blessed—not only because of what they have done for us, but because we have watched them pour that same love into so many others. What a beautiful testimony of the Body of Christ! When God's people live out His steadfast love, His chesed becomes visible to a watching world.

Then we come to the greatest gift of all.

1 John 5:11 tells us,

"God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son."

The Greek word used for life here is zoe (ζωή). Unlike biological life, zoe refers to the very life of God—eternal, abundant, divine life. The moment we place our faith in Jesus Christ, we receive this eternal life. We are no longer simply surviving day by day; we are living with the very life of Christ dwelling within us.

That truth transforms our waiting.

Our circumstances may still be difficult. The answers may not come as quickly as we hope. But our future is secure because our Savior is alive. We know the end of the story. We know that every promise God has made will be fulfilled. We know that one day every tear will be wiped away, every burden will be lifted, and every waiting season will give way to everlasting joy.

That is why Psalm 71:23 declares,

"I will shout for joy and sing your praises, for You have ransomed me."

Notice the progression. We begin quietly trusting. We continue patiently waiting. Then, as we remember God's chesed and rejoice in His zoe, our waiting turns into worship. Our silence becomes singing. Our uncertainty becomes confidence. Our hearts overflow with praise because we remember that we belong to the One who has already delivered us through Jesus Christ.

Perhaps today you are waiting for healing. Perhaps you are praying for a prodigal child, financial provision, restored relationships, or clear direction. Do not lose heart. The God whose chesed has never failed will not fail you now. The Savior who has given you zoe has already secured your eternity.

Wait with hope.

Trust with confidence.

Praise Him before the answer comes.

One day your quiet prayers will become joyful songs, and your patient waiting will turn into shouting for joy because the Lord has been faithful every step of the way.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your unfailing chesed—Your steadfast, covenant love that never changes. Thank You for loving us when we are weak, carrying us when we are weary, and reminding us daily that You are always faithful.

Lord, teach us to wait with hopeful expectation instead of fear. Strengthen our faith when the answers seem delayed, and help us trust that Your timing is always perfect.

Thank You for the precious gift of zoe, the eternal life we have through Jesus Christ. Because of Him, we have hope that reaches beyond every circumstance.

Today we especially thank You for the many ways You have blessed Ross and me. Thank You for our wonderful church family whose love so beautifully reflects Your own chesed. Bless each person who has prayed for us, encouraged us, and helped us, just as they faithfully bless so many others. May You pour back into their lives abundantly.

Thank You, Lord, for providing our Jeep. Thank You that it is running well and is fully legal. We do not take that blessing for granted. Please keep us safe as we travel to the four-church Dream Team meeting in Houlton today. Guide our conversations, unite our hearts, give us wisdom, and let everything we do bring glory to You and strengthen Your Kingdom.

May our lives always point others to Jesus, and may our waiting always become worship.

In the precious name of Jesus, we pray.

Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive our trespassers. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

BELIEVE. OBEY. BE BLESSED.

AMEN.

Love, Penny 💛
