Holding Fast at 250 Years

Scriptures

  • Psalm 33:12 – "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord."
  • 1 Timothy 2:1-2 – "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness."
  • Amos 9:11 – "In that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen."
  • Revelation 3:11 – "Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown."

The Foundation of Blessing

Today marks exactly 250 years since the birth of the United States of America. A semiquincentennial is a rare milestone in human history. It invites us to look back with gratitude and look forward with vigilance. Psalm 33:12 reminds us, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord."

The Hebrew word used here for "blessed" is אֶשֶׁר (esher). It means deep, true happiness, fulfillment, and finding the right track. This national alignment does not happen by accident. It requires intentional alignment with the Creator.

Our Sacred Duty

To sustain a nation for two and a half centuries, believers are called to a specific duty. In 1 Timothy 2:1-2, Paul urges that "supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority."

The Greek word for "intercessions" is ἔντευξις (enteuxis). It means a bold, child-like approach to a king on behalf of someone else. We are called to step into the heavenly courtroom. We must petition God for our leaders so we may lead a quiet and peaceable life.

The Missing Piece: Caring for the Whole Body

True freedom is not just about personal success; it is about how we lift up the vulnerable. Too often, we fall into the trap of thinking, "No one helped me, so why should I help them?" But a nation's true strength is measured by how it cares for its people—their health, their education, and their well-being. When we become divided into "ours" and "theirs," we forget that we are called to bear one another's burdens. Godly success is never selfish; it is a pipeline to bless others.

Restoration and Hope

History shows that nations experience seasons of decay, selfishness, and deep political brokenness. Yet, God specializes in renewal. In Amos 9:11, the Lord promises, "In that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen."

The Hebrew word for "raise up" is קוּם (koom). It means to stand up, establish, and bring something back to life. God can rebuild what has been fractured by division. He can restore the moral, spiritual, and compassionate foundations of our society if we humble ourselves and seek Him together.

Guarding the Future

As we celebrate 250 years of liberty, Jesus delivers a powerful warning. In Revelation 3:11, He declares, "Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown."

The Greek word for "hold fast" is κρατέω (krateo). It means to grip tightly, hold with maximum strength, and never let go. We must firmly hold onto faith, righteousness, and the call to love our neighbor. We cannot let a culture of division strip away our spiritual inheritance of compassion and unity.

A Prayer for the Nation

Lord God, on this 250th anniversary of our nation, we come to You with both gratitude and a humble heart. We thank You for keeping us thus far through every storm and season of division. Forgive us for the times we have let bitterness, selfishness, and political walls close our hearts to our neighbors. Soften our spirits, Lord. Help us to value the person across the aisle, to desire true care and healing for the sick and struggling, and to use our success to bless the people around us. Heal our land, unite our hearts, and teach us to walk in Your grace. In Jesus' precious name we pray! Amen!

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive our trespassers. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.

BELIEVE, OBEY, BE BLESSED, AMEN. BOBBA ❤️

Love, Penny 💛
