Cultivating a Duty of Devotion


Ecclesiastes 12:13 (NIV)

"Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind."

Psalm 112:5

"Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice."

Isaiah 41:10

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."


A meaningful life is never built on random actions. It is cultivated through an intentional, deeply rooted relationship with God. As we align our hearts and our daily lives with His truth, we begin to experience the peace, purpose, and joy that only He can give.

1. The Core Purpose: Revering God

Ecclesiastes 12:13 reveals the very foundation of human life:

"Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind."

The Hebrew word translated "fear" is יִרְאָה (yirah), meaning profound reverence, awe, and holy respect. This is not the fear of punishment but the loving reverence of a child who deeply honors a good Father. When we live with yirah, obedience becomes a delight rather than a burden.

2. The Daily Walk: Living Justly

A heart that reveres God naturally changes how we treat others.

Psalm 112:5 reminds us:

"Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice."

Faith is never meant to remain hidden within us. It reveals itself through generous hands, compassionate hearts, and fair dealings with everyone we meet. Reverence for God always produces love for people.

3. The Divine Assurance: Facing Our Fears

Living faithfully is not always easy. Trials, uncertainty, and opposition often surround us.

God answers our fears with these comforting words:

"Do not fear... I will strengthen you and help you."

The Hebrew word translated "dismayed" comes from שָׁעָה (sha'ah), meaning to gaze around anxiously or look about in alarm. How often do we do exactly that? We scan our circumstances instead of fixing our eyes on Christ.

God gently reminds us that we don't need to live looking around in panic. His righteous right hand is holding us securely.

4. The Spiritual Fruit: Becoming Good Soil

Jesus ties these truths together in Matthew 13:18-23.

He explains that the seed sown on good soil represents those who hear God's Word, understand it, and allow it to produce abundant fruit.

The Greek word συνίημι (syniemi) means to connect the pieces together, to perceive deeply, and to truly understand.

Biblical understanding is much more than gaining information. It is allowing God's truth to transform our hearts until our lives begin reflecting Christ Himself.

When we cultivate yirah (reverence), refuse to live in sha'ah (anxious fear), and embrace syniemi (deep understanding), our hearts become fertile soil where God's Word flourishes.

Cultivating Good Soil Every Day

Good soil is never accidental.

Just as a farmer faithfully tends his fields, we must faithfully tend our hearts.

Even spending 5 to 20 minutes with God several times throughout the day can completely reshape our lives.

Prayer softens the soil.

Praise waters the heart.

Silence allows His truth to sink deeply into our souls.

Knowing God Personally

The Hebrew word יָדַע (yada) means to know intimately through personal experience.

Biblical knowledge is not merely learning facts about God.

It is walking with Him.

Talking with Him.

Listening to Him.

Trusting Him.

As we intentionally pause throughout the day, we move beyond simply knowing about God and begin truly knowing Him.

Growing Trust

The Greek word πίστις (pistis) means unwavering faith, confident trust, and complete reliance.

Faith grows stronger every time we choose to depend upon God instead of ourselves.

These daily moments with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit gradually replace anxiety with peace, fear with confidence, and striving with surrender.

Here is a sample of daily time with God!

Morning Guide – Setting the Soil ☀️

Goal: Begin your day with praise and surrender.

Sing:

"I will enter his gates with thanksgiving in my heart, I will enter his courts with praise. I will say this is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice for He has made me glad!

Pray for wisdom, strength, and opportunities to love others well.

Spend a few quiet moments reflecting on yirah—standing in awe before your Creator.


Noon Guide – Tending the Garden 🌤️

Goal: Pause before anxiety takes root.

Read Psalm 46:10

"Be still, and know that I am God."

Bring your worries to Jesus.

Lift your eyes toward Heaven instead of looking around in fear.

Goal: Rest in God's faithful care.

Sing:

Give thanks with a grateful heart. Give thanks to the Holy One. Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son.

Read Psalm 139:23-24

Ask the Lord to search your heart.

Celebrate the fruit He produced today.

Confess where you fell short.

Receive His forgiveness.

Then end your day in complete silence, resting confidently in His righteous right hand.


A Personal Reflection

As I wrote these words, I couldn't help but think about the journey God has taken Ross and me on. There was a time when our lives were filled with worry, heartache, uncertainty, and trying to solve everything in our own strength. Then came seasons of homelessness, loss, illness, and even fire. Looking back now, I can clearly see that those difficult days became the very soil God used to grow our faith.

He taught us that real peace isn't found when life is easy—it is found when we stay close to Him. Those small moments of prayer throughout the day have become precious to me. Whether I am driving, serving at church, helping with the food cupboard, ringing bells with the children, or simply sitting quietly at home, I have learned that God faithfully meets us wherever we intentionally seek Him.

The more time we spend with Him, the richer the harvest becomes.

May our hearts always remain good soil where His Word grows deep roots and produces fruit that points others to Jesus.


Abba Father,

We are so blessed to call you Father. You guide us and teach us to be good humans. Lord, help each person who reads this understand the importance of a personal and deep connection with you. Once our lives align with your will, everything ...even our trials just seem easier. We have less stress and we start to see Your loving handiwork intricately woven into our everyday ordinary lives. This brings us peace that surpasses all understanding. 

Thank you Sweet Jesus for carrying that cross that bore our names. Thank you for your blood shed so that we may be redeemed and spend eternity in Heaven in the loving arms of our Triune God!

In Jesus precious name, we Thank you God for loving us! Amen!
