The Rhythm of Rest, Freedom and Purpose

The Rhythm of Rest, Freedom, and Purpose

Scripture Reading

  • Psalm 46:10: "Be still, and know that I am God. I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world."
  • Psalm 119:76: "May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise."
  • Galatians 5:13: "For you were called to live in freedom my brothers and sisters. But don't use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead use your freedom to serve one another in love."
  • Psalm 90:17: "May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands."

Our days often feel like a non-stop race. We rush to finish tasks, worry about the future, and try to prove our worth through our achievements. Today, God invites us into a completely different rhythm—one that begins with stillness and ends with purposeful, favored impact.

Step 1: Pause and Receive

The journey does not begin with striving; it begins with surrender. God tells us, "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). Before you try to conquer your to-do list, stop and breathe. Recognize that He is in control.

When anxiety or exhaustion creeps in, lean into Psalm 119:76. You do not have to perform to earn God's love; you simply need to rest in it. His promises are your safety net.

Step 2: Walk in True Freedom

Once we are anchored in God’s comforting love, our perspective on freedom changes. Galatians 5:13 reminds us that we are "called to freedom." This is not a license to do whatever we want, but a liberation to do what is right. True freedom releases us from selfish ambition and opens our hearts to "through love serve one another."

Step 3: Work with Divine Favor

When we serve others from a place of spiritual rest and freedom, our daily tasks turn into holy assignments. We can confidently pray Psalm 90:17: "May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands." Your efforts are no longer just empty labor. When wrapped in God's favor, your everyday work gains eternal significance.

Going Deeper into Psalm 90

Psalm 90 is a prayer of Moses, who spent 40 years wandering in a desert watching a generation pass away. He knew all about a temporary, fleeting life.

  • The Twin Request: Moses asks God to "establish" (kun) the work of our hands. This means to make something stable, permanent, and enduring. He repeats it twice for emphasis.
  • The Deeper Meaning: Humans naturally build sandcastles. Our businesses can fail, our health declines, and our earthly empires crumble. But when God's "favor" (noam—beauty, pleasantness, delight) rests on your work, your temporary actions are stamped with eternity.
  • The Application: Your daily work—whether it is changing diapers, writing code, leading a meeting, or sweeping floors—becomes eternal the moment it is done in love and service. God takes your temporary hustle and weaves it into His permanent Kingdom.

The Daily Loop

Every single day, you have a choice on how to live:

  • [The Human Way]: Striving \rightarrow Exhaustion \rightarrow Self-Protection \rightarrow Fleeting Results
  • [The God Way]: Stillness \rightarrow Comfort \rightarrow Loving Service \rightarrow Eternal Impact
  • Note: You cannot skip steps. You cannot have an "established legacy" (Psalm 90) if you are running on the fumes of an unquieted soul.

    How Do We Make This Work?

    The world tells us that our value is tied to our income. High expectations from church, family, or society can make us feel like a failure if we cannot provide or contribute financially.

    • The Reality Check: God’s Chesed (unfailing love) is a covenant, not a business contract. He does not love you more when you tithe more, and He does not love you less when you are struggling to pay rent—or even when your Jeep is still not "jeeping!" The parts might be sitting there just waiting to be put on before moving to registration, alignment, inspection, and insurance, but God's timing is perfect.
    • The Application: Let His love be your comfort, not your performance. When you feel judged by worldly expectations, listen to that still, small inner voice. You can serve God and His people beautifully through your time and actions.
    • The Action: Remind yourself daily: "My current bank balance is not an indication of God's favor or my worth." How we love God and serve His people counts infinitely more than a bank account.

    Redefine "Serving" Without Spending a Dime

    Galatians 5:13 says to "serve one another through love." Notice it does not say through finances. Some of the most valuable resources in the world cost absolutely nothing.

    • The Reality Check: People with financial wealth often throw money at problems because they lack time. When resources are tight, your presence, your empathy, and your attention become your highest, rarest currency.
    • The Application: Stop trying to meet everyone's material expectations. You have a freedom in Christ that means you do not have to people-please. If your motivation is anything other than love, the heart is stuck in the brain, and the brain is falsifying information. Serve out of love, not obligation or guilt.
    • The Action: Offer the "currency of the soul." This looks like:
      • Attention: Listening deeply to a friend who is lonely.
      • Spiritual Warfare: Praying specifically and fiercely for someone.
      • Labor: Helping an elderly neighbor carry groceries.
      • Kindness: Sharing an encouraging word or a genuine smile with a busy cashier at Ellis's or Dollar General. Your simple "thank you" might rescue a soul crushed by hidden thoughts today.

    Trust God to Multiply Your Small Actions

    Moses asked God to establish the work of our hands, not the size of our wallets. God specializes in taking things that look small, insignificant, or poor, and making them eternal.

    • The Reality Check: The widow who gave two small copper coins was bankrupt by worldly standards, but Jesus said she gave more than everyone else (Luke 21:1-4). God’s math is completely different than ours.
    • The Application: It took years of preparation and hard work for mankind to take that one giant leap onto the moon. Don't discount small steps. If all you can do today is survive, keep your temper, and remain faithful, ask God to multiply that.
    • The Action: Shift your focus from scale to faithfulness. If you are prayerfully doing your best day-to-day to serve our Triune God, understand that He doesn't require our help—He simply enjoys seeing us cheerfully love folks in our communities.

    Summary of Your Daily Plan

    • Morning: Stop the scramble. Sit in stillness for 5 minutes. Tell God you trust Him with what you lack. Pray, praise, and meditate on Him, asking Him to guide your steps and help you make sound decisions.
    • Midday: When expectations pressure you, remember your worth is secured. Say a healthy "no" to things that require resources you don't have, and anchor yourself in His love.
    • Evening: Look back at your day. Did you show love, patience, or kindness to anyone? If yes, celebrate that. Your hands did eternal work today, completely free of charge.

    Daily Prayer

    Abba Father, Lord of Everything, please help us teach and guide the children as they plant the herb garden for our Food Cupboard participants. Let it be a lesson in Your growth, provision, and care. We also ask that You help us celebrate one of our wonderful adult helpers today on their Birthday! Fill them with joy, and let us spread Your light to everyone around us. In Jesus' precious name we pray,

    Amen.

    The Lord's Prayer

    Our Father, who art in heaven,

    hallowed be thy name;

    thy kingdom come;

    thy will be done;

    on earth as it is in heaven.

    Give us this day our daily bread.

    And forgive us our trespasses,

    as we forgive those who trespass against us.

    And lead us not into temptation;

    but deliver us from evil.

    For thine is the kingdom,

    the power, and the glory,

    for ever and ever.

    BELIEVE, OBEY, BE BLESSED, AMEN. — BOBBA ❤️

    Love, Penny 💛
