Rest for the Weary Soul
Rest for the Weary Soul
Scripture Reading
“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” — Matthew 11:29-30
“The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others...” — 1 Peter 4:7-10
Devotional Reflection
Life often feels like a constant balancing act between urgent demands and deep exhaustion. In 1 Peter, we are given a wake-up call: be alert, be sober-minded, pray, serve, and love deeply. The words carry weight and responsibility. If we try to live out this calling in our own strength, burnout is almost guaranteed.
That is why Peter’s words must be read alongside Jesus’ invitation in Matthew 11. Jesus never asked us to carry the crushing weight of life alone. Instead, He invites us to take His yoke upon us. A yoke was designed for shared labor. When we walk with Christ, He carries the heavier side of the burden.
True alertness and deep prayer do not come from panic or striving. They flow from a soul resting securely in Jesus. We can only love deeply, serve joyfully, and offer hospitality sincerely when our hearts have first been filled by His grace.
The burdens I carried before I truly surrendered my life to Jesus were overwhelming. I lost sleep many nights. I understand depression. I know what it feels like to be flattened beneath responsibilities and fears. One time, as an adult, I hid in my closet with a blanket over me because my mind was so overwhelmed by everything pressing in around me.
At the time, I worked in the ICU, often forty-eight hours or more each week. We were constantly short staffed. The pressure was relentless. I was the only one working because Ross had suffered a serious back injury after falling on a wet floor that had not been marked. He lived in constant pain. We owned our home, but every month felt like survival mode — balancing repairs, bills, groceries, and the needs of our children.
Our youngest struggled with behavioral issues that caused us great concern. Our oldest blessed us with a beautiful grandchild, but all of us were struggling just to make it through each day. Even after the children grew and moved out, life still felt like one long uphill battle.
Why is it that we humans so often fail to realize that without God everything becomes a struggle? We shrug our shoulders and say, “That’s just life.” Yet all it takes is one major car repair, one medical issue, or one home emergency for everything to feel like total disaster.
For years we lived that way, never understanding that our greatest mistake was trying to live without fully depending on God.
Then came the fire.
After our children were grown, Ross and I entered a season of homelessness that lasted a little over two years. At the time, one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter had been living with us, though they moved between family households after the fire. We lived first in a borrowed camper. Deep within us, prayers began to rise. Quietly, both of us turned back toward Jesus. We prayed for one another. We prayed for our family. We prayed for our circumstances.
Eventually we had to return the borrowed camper, and we found ourselves living in tents with eight dogs, ten cats, and two worn-out souls. When we were finally able to buy a hard-sided pop-up camper, we were beyond grateful, even though it was bitterly cold during the winter months.
But through every hardship, God was with us.
Slowly, things began to change. Doors opened. God guided us to land we could actually afford. Patten was hours away from family and friends, but homelessness carries with it a terrible sense of shame and unworthiness. Yet God never abandoned us there.
First He provided the land. The following year, He provided a home.
Before the home came, God led us to a food cupboard, and through that place He introduced us to incredible people who became like family to us. Once the COVID restrictions lifted, we were overjoyed to finally attend church again. Our faith deepened. Our prayers deepened. We began praying together, truly together, and miracles started happening.
Someone heard about our situation and told us about a camper for sale. When they spoke to the owners about us, the owners cut the price in half.
That was not luck. That was God.
Looking back now, we can see that Jesus was carrying us even when we did not fully recognize Him. Through every cold night, every anxious moment, every tear, and every prayer, He never left us.
Today, let Jesus carry your burdens too. Let His gentleness calm your anxious heart. Stop trying to carry tomorrow before it arrives. The world may feel heavy, but His yoke is easy and His burden is light. Amen.
When you rest in Him, you will find strength to pray with clarity, love with sincerity, and serve with joy.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for never leaving us, even in the darkest seasons of life. Thank You for carrying us when we were too weary to stand on our own. Forgive us for the times we tried to bear every burden ourselves instead of trusting You.
Lord Jesus, teach us to walk beside You and to rest in Your presence. Calm every anxious thought and every fearful heart. Help us to remember that You are gentle, faithful, and near to the brokenhearted.
Strengthen us to love others deeply, to serve joyfully, and to pray faithfully. Let our lives become testimonies of Your goodness and mercy. Thank You for every provision, every answered prayer, and every unseen miracle along the way.
No matter what we face, help us keep our eyes fixed on You.
In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
BELIEVE, OBEY, BE BLESSED. AMEN.
BOBBA
