The Walk of the Righteous: From Darkness to Abounding Grace

  • 1 John 1:5 – "This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all."
  • Proverbs 14:16 – "The wise are cautious and avoid danger; fools plunge ahead with reckless confidence."
  • 1 Corinthians 10:13 – "The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure."
  • 2 Corinthians 5:21 – "For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ."
  • 2 Corinthians 9:8 – "And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others."

The Walk of the Righteous: From Darkness to Abounding Grace

1. The Radiant Purity of Phōs (1 John 1:5)

God is Phōs (φῶς)—not just a light source, but the very essence of holiness. In Greek, John uses a double negative to emphasize that there is "not-not one bit" of darkness in Him. When we spent two years in the darkness of homelessness, it wasn't just a lack of a roof; it was a mental fog. But because God is Phōs, He exposes the path. He led us to a piece of property we could manage—a literal light in a dark season.

2. The Skillful Art of Chakam (Proverbs 14:16)

Wisdom is Chakam (חָכָם)—the "skill in living." It’s the craftsman's touch applied to daily choices. Once we settled on our land, we realized how far we had drifted. By applying Chakam, we didn't just "know" better; we acted with Yare (reverent caution) and returned to the church, skillfully navigating away from the sins that once ensnared us.

3. The Ambush and the Ekbasis (1 Corinthians 10:13)

When life feels like an ambush, God provides an Ekbasis (ἔκβασις)—a "mountain pass" or escape hatch. During that first harsh winter with no heat or electricity, we were trapped in a ravine of hardship. But God, our Divine Scout, provided the Ekbasis: a tiny, affordable mobile home and the power to make life manageable. He didn't just watch us struggle; He showed us the way up the cliffs.

4. The Great Exchange of Dikaiosynē (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Our standing isn't based on our performance, but on Dikaiosynē (δικαιοσύνη)—judicial righteousness. Through the "Wonderful Exchange," Jesus took our Hamartia (missing the mark) and gave us His status. As we grew closer to Him, our behavior naturally changed. We didn't just attend church; we stepped into leadership because we finally understood that we were "made right" to do His work.

5. The Super-Abounding Perisseuō (2 Corinthians 9:8)

God doesn't give grace in small doses; He gives Perisseuō (περισσεύω)—grace that overflows like the leftovers of the five thousand. We realized that our suffering was the training ground for our salvation, which has now led to our service. We are not just surviving; we are a reservoir of His favor, equipped to pour love and patience into others.

Reflection: Today, you walk with Chakam to avoid the traps, an Ekbasis already prepared for every trial, and Perisseuō grace to bless every person you encounter.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for being our Phōs in the seasons of deep darkness. Thank You for the Chakam to see the traps of the enemy and the Ekbasis to escape them. We stand today in the Dikaiosynē of Christ, not by our own strength, but by Your sacrifice. Let Your grace Perisseuō in our lives today so that we may serve Your people with the same love You showed us during our hardest winters.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
