The Shield, The Story, and The Strength
The Shield, The Story, and The Strength
Scriptures (NLT):
• Psalm 3:3 – But you, O Lord, are a shield around me; you are my glory, the one who holds my head high.
• John 5:29 – and they will rise again. Those who have done good will rise to experience eternal life, and those who have continued in evil will rise to experience judgment.
• Luke 1:37 – For the word of God will never fail.
• Isaiah 43:19 – For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.
• Philippians 2:1-4 – Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
Devotion
When enemies rise up — whether they’re people, anxiety, or that voice in your own head — it can feel like the walls are closing in. But Psalm 3:3 gives us a different picture: “But you, O LORD, are a shield around me.” The Hebrew word is magen (מָגֵן) — not just a front-facing shield, but a total covering. God doesn’t just watch from a distance; He surrounds you and lifts your head from despair to glory.
It’s easy to get stuck staring at the wreckage behind us. Yet Isaiah 43:19 says He’s already doing a new thing, carving rivers in our dry places. And Luke 1:37 seals it: “For the word of God will never fail.” That word word is rhema (ῥῆμα) in Greek — the spoken, active word of God that carries power to fulfill every promise. No rhema from Him is void of power.
So how do we walk in that? Philippians 2:1-4 calls us to humility and unity — to stop striving and start serving, trusting God to lift our heads. And John 5:29 reminds us where this is all heading: a resurrection. Jesus uses two different words for “done.” Those who have poieō (ποιέω) good — produced the fruit of faith — rise to life. Those who have prassō (πράσσω) evil — practiced a lifestyle of worthless things apart from God — rise to judgment (krisis, a separation).
Here’s the beauty: “doing good” isn’t a checklist to earn heaven. In John’s Gospel, the ultimate “good work” is believing in the One God sent (John 6:29). When God is your magen, the good that flows from you is just His rhema taking root and producing life through you. You’re not busy with empty prassō; you’re bearing fruit with poieō.
Reflection
Today, stop looking down at your problems. Let the Lord, your magen, lift your head to see the new thing He’s already started. Your “good” is simply His grace at work.
Action Step
Name one “old thing” — a worry, habit, or resentment — and release it to God. Then write down one “new thing” you believe He’s doing in your life. Speak His rhema over it.
Hebrew Keyword: Magen (מָגֵן) – Psalm 3:3. Shield, buckler, defender. Divine protection that surrounds, not just blocks.
Greek Keyword: Rhema (ῥῆμα) – Luke 1:37. The spoken, active word of God. It carries power to create and fulfill.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being my magen today. When anxiety and enemies rise, You surround me on every side and lift my head. I release the old wreckage and set my eyes on the new thing You are doing. Let Your rhema take root in me, that my life would poieō good fruit for Your glory. Give me humility to serve others and courage for my interview in 3 hours. Let Your power, not my performance, speak through me. In Jesus’ precious name we pray, Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer (KJV)
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. – Matthew 6:9-13
BOBBA: BELIEVE, OBEY, BE BLESSED AMEN 🙏
Love, Penny 💛
