The Seed of New Identity
The Seed of New Identity
The Foundation: Word of God (NLT)
“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
“God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers.” — Matthew 5:11
“The Sovereign Lord will show his justice to the nations of the world. Everyone will praise him! His righteousness will be like a garden in early spring, with plants springing up everywhere.” — Isaiah 61:11
“The father of godly children has cause for joy. What a pleasure to have children who are wise.” — Proverbs 23:24
“Children, always obey your parents, for this pleases the Lord.” — Colossians 3:20
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.” — Psalm 4:8
The Seed of New Identity
Our journey begins with a total transformation. In 2 Corinthians 5:17, the Greek word for "new" is kainos. Unlike neos (new in time, like a new calendar), kainos means new in nature or quality. In Christ, you aren't just a "patched-up" version of your old self; you are a completely new kind of being. The "old" has passed away—it is legally and spiritually gone.
The Soil of Resilience
As a "new creation," you may face pushback from a world that doesn't recognize your nature. In Matthew 5:11, Jesus uses the word makarios for "blessed." In ancient Greek, this described a state of divine satisfaction independent of hardships. It’s a "flourishing" that happens even in rocky soil. When you are criticized for your faith, it is proof that your new nature is visible.
Springing into Righteousness
In Isaiah 61:11, the Hebrew word for "spring up" is tsamach. It describes the internal pressure of a seed as it bursts through the dirt. Growth isn't something you force; it is something God empowers. This promise is most evident when the ground has been scorched. For over two years, the ashes of a house fire and the weight of homelessness could have signaled an end, but in God’s kingdom, fire often prepares the soil for a more resilient harvest.
The Fruit of the Family
This growth changes our homes. In Proverbs 23:24, the word for "rejoice" is giyl, meaning to "spin around" or "dance" with joy. In the lean years of homelessness, leading a family in righteousness is an act of spiritual flourishing that defies circumstance. In Colossians 3:20, "pleases" is the Greek euarestos, meaning "well-pleasing." Our everyday obedience and the wisdom of our children become a spiritual offering that brings a smile to God’s face.
Resting in the Harvest
While the fire moved you physically far from biological kin, it moved you spiritually into the heart of a kainos (new) family—a church body reflecting the true shalom of Psalm 4:8. Shalom isn't just quiet; it is wholeness and restoration. You can finally lie down and sleep in safety, knowing you are held by both your Heavenly Father and His people. The "old" structures are gone, but the "new creation" remains, standing tall and "springing up" with praise.
Reflection
Which area of your life is God "springing up" (tsamach) today? Is it in your personal identity, your family relationships, or your ability to find peace in the middle of a storm?
A Prayer for the New Creation
Heavenly Father, thank You for making me a "kainos" creation. Thank You that the ashes of my past—the fires and the seasons of lack—were simply the soil You used to grow something beautiful. Help me to rest in Your shalom tonight, knowing that my safety is found in You alone. May my life and my family be a garden that springs up with Your righteousness for all to see. This I ask in Jesus precious name, Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
BELIEVE, OBEY, BE BLESSED, AMEN.
